YOSHITAKA AMANO

Year of birth: 1952
Country: Japan

About: A renowned artist, character designer, and illustrator whose style is defined by an ethereal, fluid, and often melancholic aesthetic. He is arguably the most significant "fine artist" to have permanently influenced the visual language of the video game medium.

Contribution to Final Fantasy I: He served as the primary character and concept designer. His contribution is the introduction of "Ethereal Stylisation" to a medium that was previously limited by blocky, rigid pixel art. Amano forced the game’s developers to aspire toward a higher level of artistic sophistication, proving that a digital world could hold the same weight and atmosphere as a film or a fantasy novel.
