Video games bring together many forms of creativity, from visual art and music to programming, design and storytelling. But how do these different contributions shape the identity of a game? And how can we understand the role of the people behind them?
This research explores the creative development of video games throughout their history, focusing on the artists, designers, programmers, composers and other practitioners whose decisions contribute to how games look, sound and play.
Through selected case studies, interviews and historical research, the project examines the relationship between individual creativity, collaboration and the technological and cultural conditions of game development.
This website documents the research as it develops, sharing case studies, resources, interviews and publications, while inviting contributions from people interested in the creative history of video games.
We are looking for creatives, game developers, and players interested in the artistic side of video games to take part in short interviews or quick surveys.
Your experience and views will help shape this research. Participation is flexible and informal. If interested, please get in touch.
